Comms Update: Email Changes

January 25, 2024 in News and Updates

By Tiarra Joslyn.

Nearly two years ago, VP of Communications Hillary Berman and I worked together to create and roll out a new way for congregants to manage their Beth El email. An article penned by Hillary in the February 2022 Scroll about the then-new system begins, “Beth El sends too much email!” And while our endeavor to help customize your experience in regard to what communications you receive from Beth El was an overall success, the truth is that we still send too much email.

We all have different needs and interests served by the Beth El community, and Beth El has a lot of information to share. So in efforts to make sure everyone knows what’s going on in and beyond the building, review feedback we’ve received, and continue to improve on our communications, recently, we once again sat down to discuss our email newsletter system.

Beginning in February, we will send five primary programming emails over the course of each month – one email for each of the four categories of Engage, Connect, Learn, and Pray (to get an idea of what you’ll find in each of these categories, see the monthly programming guide on page 4 of the February Scroll), plus a monthly overview of all programs. Everyone will receive one of these emails in February, with a box at the top containing a link to update your preferences. If you’d like to continue receiving that email, do nothing. If you’d prefer not to, you can update your settings and opt out. Our goal is for these to be a quick read, but one that offers a super informative and organized way of receiving information.

These emails will replace some of the digests that currently exist, but others such as the Week Ahead, the Off the Bimah clergy email, Israel updates, simchas, and Women of Beth El and Men’s Club will remain in slightly modified ways. If you are already subscribed to any of these, you’ll still receive them. If you aren’t and would like to be, you can update your preferences by finding the “update your preferences” link at the bottom of any Beth El email or by emailing me at tjoslyn@bethelmc.org.

It’s our hope that by consolidating our topic newsletters into these four core categories, and by making some minor modifications around frequency and content of the other email newsletters, that we can make it easier to know what’s happening at Beth El while sparing your inbox just a bit.
